Poker History
The Origin of Poker
Due to the differences of opinion about the origin of the game of cards known as Poker, we at Poker Book Shop are not clear as to which culture invented it, nor as to the exact era. It has been suggested that it could have resulted from a variety of different games. To be exact, no one really has the answer to the number one question.Who invented Poker?
Even the origin of the word "Poker" itself has also been debated. Most believe that the 18 th century French card game, "poque" gave light to the name, others believe that is was derived from the Hindu word "pukka". Still others think that it came from a German card game called "pochspiel", where there is a hint of bluffing involved.
With certainty, as with all things that have a history, the game has changed and evolved throughout the years of its existence and that evolution is still continuing as time marches forward. The game has gone from its most recent incarnation of brick and mortar houses (saloons and riverboats in the old west) to current day online poker rooms. The mania doesn't stop there, poker has become so popular that tournaments are even being televised by ESPN and
The Travel Channel , and there's even the Game Show Network who's producing the series Poker Royale: The WPPA Championship .
Where will the craze end? Use your imagination!
